1. Use A Good Quality Tent
One of the first things you can try that will improve your sleep when tent camping is getting a good quality tent. Purchasing a really good tent will increase your comfort a lot and will make sleeping a lot more inviting. So for Better Sleep While Tent Camping try looking for a good quality tent.
Some Things to Look For In a Good Tent That Aids In A Good Night’s Sleep
- Canvas, not required.
- Double Wall.
- Has a Rainfly.
- Choose a tent at least 2 men bigger than you need. (however, this is an option not a sign of a good tent).
Read this post I wrote on tent condensation and some ways to try reduce it. if you can keep condensation down to a minimum it will make for a good night’s sleep. You will find a good quality tent will already have features in it that will help reduce condensation.
2. Use A Good Quality Sleeping Bag
Getting yourself a great sleeping bag is a really good decision if uncomfortable nights tent camping are something you want to avoid. A good quality sleeping bag will make you feel like your sleeping on a cloud.
My advice is to get a sleeping bag that repeals moister and is lined with down. You can pick a sleeping bag up with these qualities online from Amazon and other stores.
A good sleeping bag will add a little bit more cushioning under you, in turn, giving you a comfier nights sleep.
3. Use A Good Quality Sleeping Pad
Have you tried a good quality sleeping pad? there are lots of models out there but id suggest you look for a sleeping pad that is insulated and blocks out the cold from the ground.
Lots of people use blow up mattresses but try having a good night sleep on some of them. If you do use a blow up mattress use a single bed one and choose a good brand with comfort as one of the selling points.
You could also try using an inflatable foam or memory foam mattress as well, for a really good night’s sleep. combining some of these options as well is a really good way to ensure you get a great night’s sleep.
4. Bring Extra Padding, ie “Yoga Mats”
Bringing some extra padding like a yoga mat for under your bed is another great way to add some comfort to your bed while tent camping.
Bringing lots of padding or really thick comfy beds will add lots of weight so it will depend on what type of camping you’re doing and if you’re bringing a vehicle etc..
In most cases, a sleeping pad, a yoga mat or two and a good sleeping bag will create enough padding for a good night’s sleep.
5. Making Extra Padding From Nature
While bringing extra padding like a yoga mat is more than doable if your trying to camp light there are some padding options that you can make from nature.
One of the best methods is pitching your tent on lush thick grass, while that will possibly increase condensation it will add a natural layer of padding to your bed.
Another option is to strip leaves and soft plants and lay them underneath your tent this will help add a sponge-like layer where you can then make your bed.
These tips will help make the bed in your tent a much better place to sleep.
6. Choosing Ideal Tent Location
Pitching your tent in an ideal location is a great method for helping you get a good night’s sleep. If comfort is something you’re going for, find a nice grassy space. choosing a spot with a light breeze is also wise.
The sound of running water is nice for some people but others not, for my husband he loves it and helps him drift off to sleep. So if your the kind of person that loves birds singing and water flowing and you have the option to camp close to the water then maybe this is an option you can try.
7. Drink Herbal Teas (NO Caffeine)
If you’re a coffee lover you’re not going to like what I’m about to say. Sadly you may find you will need to lay off the coffee after dark or all day for some people.
You can try substituting your coffee intake with some herbal tea, try to stay away from green tea as in some cases it has just as much caffeine as coffee.
Here’s Some Lovely Herbal Teas You Can Try.
- Chamomile Tea
- Peppermint Tea
- Ginger Tea
- Hibiscus Tea

8. Sticking to Eating Times
While it may seem not all that important I’d suggest sticking to eating meals at certain times and never eat more than a few hours before bed, if you don’t want to be up all night.
According to WebMD Eating a late dinner or snacking before going to bed can activate the digestive system and keep you up.
So stick to consistent as possible eating times and don’t eat or drink a few hours before bed.
9. Choosing The Right Foods To Eat
Eating and drinking before bed is not a great way to get a goodnight’s sleep while tent camping. You should also take into consideration what you’re eating as well. heavy foods for dinner are not wise. You should keep away from spicy food and sugar too.

Another great way to have a good night’s sleep is to make a really nice warm fire, nothing soothes you more at the end of a day than sitting near an open fire. Couple a nice warm fire with a comfy bed and your gonna feel pretty tired.
If you are camping in a nylon/polyester tent you will find making a fire inside your tent is out of the question.
If your camping in a canvas tent, on the other hand, you can buy a small camp oven with a chimney that will burn all night long, filling your ten with a soothing warmth that feels wonderful.
